Oh wow I'm tired. Went to the Turnerjoy show at the Metro last night. Went with Lisa and Ben and we met up with Chris. Chris is a friend of Lisa's who plays drums and may fit the bill for airiel. He name dropped some very cool bands last night, such as The Charlatans UK, Stone Roses and Chapterhouse. Very cool. The Turner joy show itself was pretty damn good. Well, the opening bands didn't do much for me, and the crowd was REALLY weird. While Turnerjoy make good music and have more than adequate stage presence, their audience consisted of annoying men that would "woooo!!!!" all the time and do the death metal/hail Satan hand gesture thing. There was this one scummy guy that actually kept yelling "FUCKIN-A!!!!" over and over again. He even tried to hit on Lisa. She moved over by him because she was smoking and was being very aware of my whole deal towards that and they guy immediately shouldered up to her and said "where's your man?" She simply pointed to the most cynical looking one out of the three of us boys: Chris. It was funny. Chris has a general dislike of crowds, but the size of this one wasn't what was bugging him. Can't say I blame him for being turned off. But anyway, check out Turnerjoy sometime. It's a good show.

My throat is killing me. It will be nice to not have to use my air conditioners soon, as I'm sure that's the problem. I walked to the train listening to "Reading, Writing and Arithmetic" by The Sundays this morning. It doesn't get much better than that.

I got back from the gym last night, scarffed down some food and immediately popped in Super Mario Sunshine. It's received some mixed reviews, but so far, I love it!!! It's just like Super Mario 64 in gameplay and level design, but with the added element of FLUDD, which is the water pump thingamjig that Mario wears on his back. The levels where you're stripped of FLUDD are just major jumping puzzles, and some of them are so frustrating. You know the ones I mean. You fall off and plunge to you death. I miss seeing the goombas and koopas around. So far the only thing besides the toadstool people that I've seen from the previous games are the piranha plants. I think the game play is pretty cool. Keep in mind, the only time I ever played Super Mario 64 was on my PC using an emulator and only using a KEYBOARD. Remember that bit at the end when you have to swing Bowser around in circles by his tail and then throw him into those mines? That shit aint easy when all you have to use are the arrow keys. I know that nobody is going to document my minor pop culture achievements, so I have to do it myself. Nyeh nyeh nyeh.

Random top 5 guitar players that I love list:
  • Julian Swayles (The Kitchens of Distinction)
  • Andy Partridge (XTC)
  • Robin Guthrie (The Cocteau Twins)
  • David Gavarin (The Sundays)
  • John Squire (The Stone Roses)

Weird weekend. Katie picked me up on Friday from my office and we went to Crow's Nest to find her a Le Tigre CD. No such luck, I'm afraid. We got back to my place and I tried working on her computer. She has a MAC G4 tower that uses Allen Wrenches to open the thing up and they were screwed in so tight that my wrenches were stripping. So, nuts to that. I cooked us up some F-toast and we watched Fellowship of the Ring. She slept through nearly all of the last half. She crashed on my couch that night and we joked the next morning about who snuck in on who during our personal masturbating sessions. Hah.

Woke Katie up around 7 so she could get to work and then I crashed until noon. Did laundry and made a much needed trip to the recycling center over at Pulaski Park. Also watched Sexy Beast while doing laundry. Damn, that's a fantastic movie. Ben Kingsly just oozes evil out of every orifice. Later that night I met up with Katie, Krissy, Mark, Shannon, Justine, Josh and Eddie. The plan had been to go bowling at Lincoln Bowl. We noticed the "Private Party" sign written in marker on the door, but I decided to go check anyway. I looked through the door at the top of the stairs to see this completely naked chick surrounded by 5-6 really large Hispanic guys. She had implants and everything. Not my kind of girl, but she was amazingly beautiful. That marked my second pair of boobs to see that weekend. Life is good. We all ended up going to this crappy bar in Roscoe Village called "The Four Treys". It was Karaoke night. Oh dear. Luckily I left before any of the songs my friends had requested were up, because I knew I'd be pulled into the antics. The line was huge, apparently.

Sunday I made some egg whites that ended up making me feel really awful. I took some Imodium and got out to run some errands. I went to Chicago Comics to pick up Debster's birthday present(s). Then stopped in the Chicago Music Exchange to pick up my silver Jazzmaster. They did a neck adjustment. Almost got it right. I may have to mess with it just a little. I saw this fantastic Fender Mustang Bass that would look great on Lisa. I had some time to kill, so I went to the practice space early and read Snow Crash in my car parked under a tree. Practice went well. I can't wait to play out.

I can already tell that this week is going to be busy. Tonight I go to the gym. Hopefully tomorrow I can get my hair cut. Wednesday I have this discussion group to go to where I get paid $75 to talk about how much I use my iPaq. Then DJ is coming over for some project mayhem and we're going to hit Fuji's new bar which is a block away from my apartment. Thursday night is the Turnerjoy CD release show at the Metro. Friday I'll be sucked into Mario Sunshine. Saturday I have no idea. Sunday is going to be this fucking rad show at the Metro. Tracer, Absinthe Blind, Mira and Whimsical. Monday is no work day. Fucking cool. Oh! I also finally got onto the roof of my building. I wish I wish they would make a deck up there. There is a fantastic view of the skyline from up there. A great view of the highway too, but oh well. Come on over and we'll drink some beers on the roof.

A few weeks ago, DJ bought a PS2. He's been hooked on GTA3 and our conversations at work have been hilarious. I forgot to tell him about Twisted Metal Black. It would be right up his alley, but I simply forgot. He just rented it the other night and wrote me this email in a tone that suggests I'd never heard of the game before. Here it is:

I rented a vehicular combat game that two people can play head to head.  Pick a car, pick a landscape, and blast your opponents car to a smoldering frame with a variety of weapons.  My favorite character is Brimstone.  He is a Baptist Revival Priest gone bad who drives a busted out El Camino with what looks like a dead body strapped into the bed.  When he acquires a 'Special Weapon' (each character's car has a unique one) it is a zombie that gets loaded into a cannon.  When the cannon gets fired, the zombie goes flying through the air - screaming all the while.  If the zombie lands on a car, he grips the hood and goes for a ride until he screams "Repent!" and explodes.  If the zombie lands on the ground, he just explodes.

The physics are not as "realistic" as GTA3 (with respect to thrust/weight ratios and such).  It is more of an arcade Melee.  But with zombies strapped with dynamite flying through the playing field, who can freaking complain?

DJ, this is just one of the many reasons why I love you and think that you're the shit.

August 23rd, 2002 12:00 hours CST currently listening to: "Goodbye" by the Sundays

My hangover is gone and I feel fantastic today. I should be completely destroyed, but I feel nervous and happy. I had an outstanding time last night. Lisa is turning into a fantastic friend. We moved our stuff into the rehearsal space. I should be feeling the effects of the horrible back injuries that I caused myself, but I'm not yet. I was sweating buckets. It was horrible. The place has no sound dampening at all. Everything sounds pretty bright and loud. We need to bring in some rugs. I think I've finally decided to switch to a live drummer. I think I'm getting tired of the drum machines. I'm finding them to be repetitious, clumsy and dull. Maybe it's because they sounded bad in the space. I dunno.

After practice I ran back home and changed to go to Neo. Lisa had asked me if I wanted to go earlier in the day and I just about flipped. I picked her up and we met her friend Emily, along with some other folks. The three of us danced the whole time. Well, Lisa and Emily danced more than I did, but still. I managed to suck down three g&t's and get myself pretty tipsy. Lisa and I drove around the city for a while, listening to music and babbling about whatever. Came home around 1 or so and I think I fell asleep the moment my head hit the pillow. Thankfully, Dave is gone today and while I'm getting work done, I can still slack and not feel as guilty. Hah.

I don't know what's going on this weekend. Hope wants to get together with me for a drink at some point. Have practice on Sunday. Need to get laundry done. I'll probably be so tired when I get out of work that I'll just go to Blockbuster, get some movies and games and then stay in and do laundry. I am a party animal.

August 22nd, 2002 08:40 hours CST currently listening to: "Car Song" by Elastica

Oh my. It's raining cats and dogs out there. I had to take my car into Volvo this morning to get the brakes worked on, and they let me take the shuttle down to work. Glad I didn't have to walk to and from the L in this crap. I've been sleepily gazing out of my window for the past 30 minutes at all the cool lightning. I can't see a horizon at all. I can see the end of the harbor, but that's it. It's pretty yucky out.

Lisa and I move our gear into the practice space tonight. While I'm not excited about moving that stuff down three flights, through the rain into may car, by myself, I'm thrilled at the idea that I won't have to do it every time. I'm super paranoid about everything staying secure in that place. I already completed my spreadsheet with all the serial numbers, with exception to the racked processors and my mixer. I wish my Boss PN-2 Tremolo/pan pedal had a serial number on it. That thing has been discontinued for years, and I'd die if I ever lost it. Stereo inputs. Stereo outputs. That thing is fantastic.

I took my new Jazzmaster to the Chicago Music Exchange, where I'd purchased it, to have them work on the neck. I lowered the action because of the bridge cover and now I have some wicked buzzing across 6 or 7 frets high on the neck on the d-string. They said I should have it back by the weekend. Let's hope it's a free fix. Seeing as I'm just talking about gear now, my PS2 pissed me off to a high degree last night. I rented Fellowship of the Ring last night and had to skip about 4 whole chapters because it couldn't read the disc. This is the third disc that it's done that with. I don't know if it's because it's a badly burned disc, or that my PS2 is on it's side (vertical), or that the eye is going bad. I missed the whole council sequence and that bit where Bilbo wigs out when he sees the ring again. Ok, blah blah blah. Maybe I'll start working now.

I'm at home sick right now. Feel icky all over. Don't think I'm running a fever though. It's nice to be home. I'm using the time to get some stuff done around the house. In between naps, that is. I got the velcro for my pedal boards. Need to call about getting by brakes fixed. Did a bunch of updates on the airiel site. Now I have to yell at ComEd over the phone about my electric bill. Ta ta.

My eyes are sore. My body weak. My throat is dry, I cannot speak. Too many beers last night. Weekend was outstanding.

Friday I did jack and shit, really. Laundry and finally got to watch my "Rejected" DVD. I've said it before and I'll say it again..... UPS can lick my ass. What's the point in paying extra for 2 day shipping when they require a signature in person. Every time I UPS says they can only deliver to my home address and not work, I have to eventually go down to their office on S. Jefferson and pick up the package myself. Everyone there waiting in line is just as pissed as me, usually.

Saturday, Jeff and Kim and I went to the Chihuli exhibit in Garfield Park. It was wonderful. I was surprised that they allowed camera's in there. It seemed like every other group had one. Afterwards we went to Humboldt Park to see the new Redmoon production. The weather was fantastic. We arrived a bit early, so we walked down to the Flying Saucer for a sodas and muffins. The play was wonderful. Redmoon never fails to impress me. Even the disappointing All Hallow's Eve festival last year still had it's moments. The Chicago air and water show was going on that day, and the blue angels flew overheard a few times. The entire cast would stop (sometimes mid-sentence) to look up at the sky. That was neat. Gave everyone in the crowd a chance to look up without feeling guilty.

I met up with Lisa for a second to give her her ticket to Sonic Youth, then I motored over to Jeff and Kim's to meet Jennifer, Matt and Josh over at Toons. Despite being out of Beck's and Newcastle, they appeased me by having the best damn turkey burger I've ever had. Jeff and I tried to make do with the limited selection they carried in their jukebox, then walked over to the Metro for Sonic Youth. The placed was filled. I hadn't been in a crowd that large at the Metro since Lush, Scheer and Mojave 3 played there several years ago. I managed to find a spot in the back left area. The area with that slightly raised floor, so I could be just tall enough to see over everyone's heads. Lost the group I came in with entirely, but managed to find them on the way out. Finally found Lisa and her friends, who I must say, were super nice. I must hang out with Ben and Mike again. I'm sure I will. Ben, Lisa and I went to Zephyr for food. Well, they got food. I was still too full from the turkey burger and beer so I just had water and OJ. Lisa showed me the house she used to own, where Ben now lives. She seemed to get very nostalgic and a bit sad when she described it.

Had another very productive practice with Lisa on Sunday. We're already working on 7 songs and this was our 3rd practice together. I'm so excited, I could scream. We'll be ready to play out in a month, I bet. Which is what I told Christian later that night when he and I met at Fuel for drinks. He arrived on his new Scooter. It was cute as hell. He wore his goggles around his neck while in the bar. I didn't hear from Lisa when/if she got out of the Sunday night Sonic Youth show (luckily duck got to see them twice), but I did hear from Katie. She, Mark and their friend Shannon met up at my place to watch porn. They rented a Rocco movie, to which I said "oh dear. here comes the ass pounding." Katie was so grossed out. If she wasn't fully a lesbian before she watched this movie, she IS NOW. It was so funny. I wish I had been a bit more awake. I would have liked to hang out with them a bit longer. Shannon seemed really cool. But alas, I had to be up at 6 AM, so I kicked them out.

Oh yeah, this was weird. On Friday, Dave brings in this plastic bag. He told me that he went to some restaurant in Little Vietnam and got some carry-out food and that this was the bag they had given him. This seems a bit odd, don't you think?

This entree is going to come out in spurts because a) I'm busy as a dyke in a hardware store right now and b) I have yet to rip the new Astrobrite song that I'm putting up for this week. So here goes the current stuff and then I'll get to the weekend.

I woke up feeling fantastic, for reasons I'll disclose later. I was even down three pounds. Woo! Got in to work and sat down and after about 30 seconds, I noticed this beeping in the distance. I got up and moved around my area of the office, and oh crap, it's coming from the server room. I opened the door to this blast of hot air. Remember Backdraft? That scene where the skinny bald guy from Who's Line Is It Anyway gets blown from his front door and into the windshield of his Porsche? That's what it felt like. Ok, ok, it wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't what I expected to feel when I walked into the server room. Quite the opposite, actually. The air conditioner had shut down and the alarm was going off. As near as I can tell, it crapped out some time around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. Luckily, and I stress luckily, the main servers hadn't shut down. 2 rebooted, but that was it. Phew. There's this ultra tan, bleached blonde hair, sleeveless work outfit, beefcake guy named Tony working on it right now. I thought he was gay as hell, and then he shook my hand like he was a hydraulic press. I'm not sure what I mean by all that, you'd just have to see him. He should be in porn.

Ok, the weekend. Friday was so strange. Two people in my office work in the same theater company, and they did a fund raiser in the office. Usually I avoid these kinds of things. I feel a bit guilty about it. Not like the guilty way I feel when I don't give homeless people money when I clearly have change in my pocket. And then I apologize when I walk by. Damn, that's weird. Anyway. The fund raiser worked like this. You donate $5 to them and then they get you your own box of one dozen Krispy Kremes. Ok, I will draw blood to get my hands on these things. Little demons of fried bliss, they are. Well, Friday was the day that they arrived. I ate 6 of the damn things right from the get go. DJ came by my desk and ate one of them as well. Went to lunch with Jeff and DJ and had a really good "oriental" salad to compensate. Around 3:30 I polished off the last 5. I made the mistake of looking at the nutritional information on the bottom of the box. 200 calories. Well, that's not so bad. Wait...... the serving size is ONE DONUT??? Oh, shit.

After work, I went with DJ to go meet up with Mary, Jeff and Josh at the Twisted Spoke. DJ and I had a couple beers before they arrived. It was really warm in there. I managed to have another really good salad. I was fooling myself into thinking that I was canceling the donuts out. I had a net gain of zero. Yeah, right. We went to our office's summer party at Joe's; horrible sports bar that looked like an unfinished barn on the inside. This entire event was lame. We couldn't invite anyone outside of the office, so it was just us bitching about work, and how much the new guy annoys us. I was pretty much an antisocial snob. I had no cash, so I felt bad about not tipping when getting my free beer. Oh yeah, it was beer and wine only and the beer had to be on tap and NOT guiness. Bullshit. Eventually Jeff took Josh to Delilah's and dropped me off on the way there. I kicked back to several hours of Resident Evil on my new Gamecube. That game looks astounding. By now, I've already beaten it as Chris, and I'm almost done with it as Jill. I may even play it all over again, I'm that much in love with it.

Ok, I need to get some work done. I'll be back to finish the weekend and put up the mp3.

**Updated at 15:55 hours CST** Alright, the mp3 is up. It's a good one from Astrobrite. The album this comes off of was all done in Japan with some other Japanese folks playing guitar, drums and bass. It's very cool.

Saturday was pretty mixed. I spent most of the day doing laundry and playing Resident Evil. I never made it out to the Boystown thing where Katie was. I went to the Metro later that night to meet up with Lisa and to see the Assassins, who I'd heard were incredible. I heard right. I was utterly blown away. These guys are gonna be huge. Danceable, great vocals, fantastic show. I have renewed faith in the Chicago music scene. I met up with some folks at the Clipper afterwards and got smoked out. It seemed like I was the only person there without a lit cigarette. Bleh.

Sunday was my first real band practice in 2 years. Lisa is fantastic. She's sweet as hell and really held up well under the stressful circumstances of learning brand new music out of nowhere. She soaked it up like a sponge. I can't wait to play out!!!! It's going to be sooner than you think. We worked on "In Your Room", "Sharron Apple", "Stratosphere", "Rainflower" and "Liquid Paper". I can't wait to practice again. I feel alive again. I feel like I'm in a band again. It's great.

Scott Cortez came over a bit later and played 2 new Astrobrite releases for me. Then we broke out GTA3 and he went nuts. It's so funny to see the reactions people have when they finally get to play that game. It's hilarious.

Wow, I have a belly full of Krispy Kremes. I've got a wicked sugar crash scheduled for 10:15, so I'm getting this entree out of the way before I start drooling uncontrollably and speaking in tongues. Picture a drunk Homer Simpson, and there you go. That's my vision of my immediate future.

I had a fantastic night last night. Met up with Krissy and Mark at Pick Me Up. Had a surprisingly good grilled chicken salad. Rachel showed up for a bit. She looked worried. Katie showed up later. We all wracked our brains on what to do. Katie isn't 21 yet, so that removed about a billion options from our list of ideas. Eventually I mumbled that I had Star Wars Monopoly at my place, and we devised a plan to go purchase Pictionary from the Target near my house and then just meet up there. So Krissy and I went for Pictionary, which they were sold out of, so we got Ultimate Outburst instead. Linsey came over because Corey was supposed to come over, and that would have evened out the teams, but he bailed at the last minute. (It was later divulged to me that Krissy hadn't explained which Jeremy she was talking about, and that Corey felt like a jackass for canceling. I rule, evidently.) Katie took her time unpacking the game. Actually, she was just getting her falic fantasies out of her system in front of everybody. You can see what I'm talking about here. I haven't had the time yet to organize those pictures at all. But needless to say, Katie has a cock fetish. HAHAHHAHAAHH.

Linsey shows up and Krissy and Katie are in full blown slap happy mode. I mean, fuck, they're sisters, and have some sort of goof-ball telepathy thing going on. It's one of those things where you either just roll with it, and find them funny, or you get so pissed off that you can't say a single sentence without getting laughed at. Oh my word, it was funny. Despite Katie spilling one of the few beers I had in my house. Damn her and her goth boots.

Let's see. What else? I got my Gamecube. In fact, the component video cable I ordered for it just arrived at my desk. I can't wait to see how much better Rogue Leader looks through the interlacing. I'm wishing I had a Dolby Pro Logic II receiver now. Tie Fighters swirling around me would just be cool. Ahem. I have so much going on this weekend. Tonight is the office summer party. The entire office drinks like a fish when we have these get togethers. Alyssa is in town this weekend, so I have to hang with her at some point. I'm going to see Turnerjoy tomorrow night, so that should be perfect. I have to do laundry. Sunday I'm having my first practice with Lisa. I'm so excited about that, I can't even sit still. Granted, a lot of that has to do with the fucking donuts I just ate. DJ just came by and ate a couple. Thank god.

Ugh. I can't sleep. Every night since I got back from Bloomington about a week and a half ago, I've been waking up several times a night. It's driving me nuts. And as far as I can recall, this always happens when I start a workout schedule. Last night I was watching a movie and could barely keep my eyes open, so I went to bed. It was around 11:00. I woke up at 2:15, and then again at 5:30. Arrgghhhhhhh. I'm going insane.

On the brighter side of things, my Gamecube should arrive today. I get to hang out with Krissy, Mark and Katie tomorrow night, Rachel got a job and I'm so happy for her, and I get to practice with Lisa on Sunday. Things are coming up roses.

Now where is my damn Tylenol PM?

Yesterday I had to go back to Borders to exchange a strategy guide for Resident Evil. Once you got to page 78, it started over from page 63. Wicked factory defect. Anyway, on my way to the blue line I walked behind a guy for three long blocks who was smoking a joint. Granted, I don't do drugs, but I'll do other peoples drugs. Hahahahahah.

Man, why am I up at 8 in the morning? Weekend has been very weird so far. Friday night, my plans changed and Katie came over. She, in a word, kicks ass. Hah. We ordered from Leona's, rocked her 8-bit Nintendo, then watched Resident Evil. A damn satisfying evening.

Saturday was just plain weird. DJ calls me up around 10:30 saying that he broke is phone last night. Oh, he also bought a PS2 and GTA3. Fantastic $300 impulse buy. Anyway, we have a spare cell phone at our office and DJ didn't have access to the building. Well, I do, of course. So he needed me to go with him. I went to the gym at 11, and then DJ picked me up at 1:00. I couldn't find the damn thing to save my life. Combed the 2 desks of our telecom admin with no luck in finding it. I left a message on her cell phone and she called me back while I was in the lobby, on my way out the door. I ran back up stairs (well, I took the elevator. whatever), and got right back into the server room. It was nowhere near where she had originally described. Mission accomplished, though. He and I went to the Twisted Spoke, so he could buy me a burger and a beer. Damn, that hit the spot. We get back to my apartment at 3, and I have to high-tail-it to my haircut which is in 30 minutes. Trouble is, I don't have my fucking keys. I'm usually super paranoid about having my keys on me when I leave, since all the doors in my building, including my apartment, simply lock when you close them. I managed to get in touch with the people who own my building, and they could meet me at 4:30, so I had DJ take me to my haircut and I took a cab home. Spent $10 on the cab, and then had to pay the $25 "lock-out fee" to the maintenance guy, who was thankfully waiting in front of the building as I arrived.

Never heard back from Hope about going out last night, so I made plans with Katie to go see Signs, up in Evanston. My initial reaction is that I absolutely loved it. Katie doesn't like to analyze movies, so I didn't get to vent all my positives and negatives afterwards. Hahaha. It reminded me a lot of early Spielberg movies. Movies like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "Poltergeist" and hell, there was even a bit of "The Blair Witch Project" thrown in there. M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite writer/directors. He even has a much larger part in this movie compared to his previous two. The cast was wonderful. Mel Gibson is playing a character type that I've never seen him do before. Joaquin Phoenix, who I got extremely irritated with in "Gladiator", really did a great job in this. The 2 children in the movie are wonderful as well. Go see this, folks. You'll like it. I hadn't been to a movie where more than girls screamed in a looong, long time.

*am now actively searching for ticket prices to get me to Singapore*

Last night I got DJ totally hooked on GTA3. He'd only heard about it and never actually played it. It took him all of half a second to get addicted to it. He's considering getting a console system, because he feels it's a great entertainment device for when people come over. I totally agree. unfortunately, he's considering getting an Xbox. I tried to give him an accurate comparison between the Gamecube, PS2 and the Xbox. Not sure which one he'll go for, but he's definitely not going to get a GameCube. When I told him about the new Mario and Zelda games coming out, he responded by saying "What am I, 6 years old?" Prick. Of course, if he does get an Xbox, he's not going to be able to play GTA3. Decisions, decisions.
